HYPOTHESIS & OBJECTIVES:

The potential for rapid emergence of Hessian fly biotypes always exists. Thus, an integrated approach is needed for the control of this pest. Utilization of multiple genes for resistance, coupled with the enhancement of existing natural enemies has the potential to enhance durability of resistant varieties.

Objectives:
1. Screen segregating populations and advanced breeding lines for resistance to Hessian fly in the laboratory

2. Continue to incorporate Hessian fly resistance genes into breeding lines

3. Screen advanced breeding lines and commercial varieties for resistance to Hessian fly in the field and assess the effectiveness of presently deployed resistance genes.
